Statement on UK Government Aid plans

Press Statement, 14 May 2025

World Vision UK is deeply concerned about the government’s recent comments that mark a step away from its global commitments and long-standing principles of supporting the most vulnerable children around the world.

“Are we really – as the UK nation – turning our backs on the world’s most vulnerable children? Girls and boys living in the world’s most difficult places are going to bear the brunt of these decisions,” says Fola Komolafe MBE DL, CEO of World Vision UK.

“Every day the humanitarian needs around the world are growing and getting more severe – especially for children living in areas where there is conflict, displacement, where food insecurity is causing starvation and diseases are spreading. World Vision strongly believes that investment in foreign aid is not “charity” - it is our responsibility, and the whole world benefits by it.”

The UK is committed to international principles (such as UN Sustainable Development Goals and UN Convention on the Rights of the Child) alongside partner nations around the world to address global challenges. Baroness Chapman’s statements made yesterday suggest a dangerous shift of UK values. This change of commitment undermines the UK’s global power internationally, and the levels of trust that other nations can have in the UK as a global leader.

World Vision calls on the UK government to undertake an assessment of the proposed cuts and changes of focus to aid before making any further decisions. Not taking the time to fully understand the implications is short-sighted and will risk everything that has already been achieved over previous decades.
